I would like to begin with one of Gaga’s most famous songs and one of the first songs that many people had ever heard from her: Pokerface! Posted below are the lyrics. At first when I heard this song, I had no idea why someone would sing about playing poker but then I looked into the true deeper meaning of the author. Gaga is a bisexual individual and I believe this song explains about her torn emotions between how she feels and how society expects her to feel: the relationship she IS in and the relationship she longs to be in. She is singing that while she is sexually involved with her current boyfriend, he can’t tell what she truly feels about him because she masks and hides her feelings behind her “pokerface.” While being intimate with this man, she is secretly thinking of a woman that she has feelings and desires for. This represents the many confused and questioning individuals out there struggling with their torn feelings. She lets these people know that what they’re feeling is normal and acceptable, nothing to be scared or ashamed of. Some people argue that this song has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality and it is all about how she is dating a man only for his money and is, in a sense, just a gold digger. Another opinion on the meaning of the song is that she is fighting with her boyfriend and wants him to be a humble person in the argument and show no emotion. In my personal opinion, I feel that by claiming “she’s got to love nobody” she is advocating that she does not need to love ANY individual to be happy, but when she does love someone it can be the person of her choice, whether male or female.
