Bad Romance is undeniably another song by Lady Gaga that people probably don’t think too much into besides the fact that it is her usual catchy fast-paced beat and outlandish costume and sexuality. However, I had once overheard someone saying that they felt the video was about the dangers of human trafficking and prostitution: about how easily a woman could find herself caught in a “Bad Romance.” This is an important topic that we in the United States often fail to accept as a severe issue within our borders, and not just in foreign countries. After taking Social Work 230 during my freshman year, we spoke about human trafficking and had many strong advocates for women and children’s rights in the class which sparked my knowledge of the dangers of sex slavery. With phrases like “cause you’re a criminal as long as you’re mine” and “I want your disease” it is easy to see the parallels between the lyrics and the real life situation. I looked into Kimberly Kotrla’s article entitled “Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking in the United States” for more information on the topic and it was shocking to see how highly affected minors are and how saddening that is because it can be avoided. It also speaks on how America is, to a degree, a culture of acceptance and tolerance. It is no wonder that in Lady Gaga’s political activist mind, she chose to advocate against such a situation. The video clearly shows men bidding on scandalously dressed provocative women. These are things that I would have never caught unless I had watched the video. Again, Gaga speaks out for human rights.
