One of the most profound songs ever produced by Lady Gaga is her most recent hit: Born This Way. Lady Gaga believes that homosexuality and bisexuality are not a choice, but that the individual was born that way and has no control over how they feel or who they love. What an absolutely empowering set of lyrics for someone, whether gay or straight, to turn when remembering to keep an open mind about minority groups. My personal favorite line is how she said that people cannot be considered ‘mistakes’ for simply being DIFFERENT. She says “I’m beautiful in my way, Cause God makes no mistakes.” She encourages her “little monsters” to not hide in regret. This is a very controversial song because of the debate as to whether or not being a GLBTIQ individual is a choice. Also, a further controversial point to make is her reference to God within the song. Many individuals claim through their religion that homosexuality is wrong and looked down upon and that God would have never made an ‘imperfect’ person. Gaga wants to let her fans know that there IS a God for them, and they are perfect in their own way. After watching many fan videos in reference to this song off Youtube, I saw an overwhelming response of gratitude and adoration. Many even said that her music encouraged them to gain confidence and come out to the public about their GLBTIQ issues. In a sense, she is more than a pop icon but also a hero to many. I think it’s also important to notice in the lyrics that she is not SOLEY speaking out for GLBTIQ individuals but ANYONE who feels they are different and being tormented, abused, or mocked, whether mentally or physically. Gaga exclaims “Whether you're broke or evergreen, You're black, white, beige, chola descent, You're lebanese, you're orient, Whether life's disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, Rejoice and love yourself today'Cause baby, you were born this way.” I have attached below the link to an awesome video that dissects each piece of Gaga’s video for Born This Way and shows exactly what certain symbols mean. Some symbols are hidden and subtle, other are more blatant. See if you can catch them all – Enjoy!
Lyrics:
It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up
'Cause you were born this way, baby
My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstarsShe rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir
"There's nothin' wrong with lovin' who you are"
She said, "'Cause He made you perfect, babe"
"So hold your head up, girl and you you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say
"I'm beautiful in my way,
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way
Don't hide yourself in regret,
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way (Born this way)
Ooo, there ain't no other way
Baby, I was born this way
Baby, I was born this way
Ooo, there ain't other way
Baby, I was born this way
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way
Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Don't be!
Give yourself prudence and love your friends
Subway kid, rejoice of truth
In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my youth
A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital H-I-M (hey, hey, hey)
I love my life, I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe yah
Don't be drag, just be a queen
Whether you're broke or evergreen
You're black, white, beige, chola descent
You're lebanese, you're orient
Whether life's disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
'Cause baby, you were born this way
No matter gay, straight or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I'm on the right track, babyI was born to be brave
Ooo, there ain't no other way
Baby, I was born this way
Baby, I was born this way
Ooo, there ain't other way
Baby, I was born this way
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way
