Gaga Making a Change for America

In conclusion, I would like to sum up that Lady Gaga gives truth to the rumor that you can’t judge a book by its cover and that nothing ever is as simple as it seems. From analyzing all of her songs I have learned so much about being a TRUE musical artist and genius. She does not just have standard Top 40 songs about the standard sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll but they can all be dissected to be so much more in regards to matters of human and gay rights. She takes a stand for minority groups of all kinds as a phenomenal show stopper and I have a true respect for what she does as an artist. She allows me to have an open mind to vast ways of interpreting important issues in our world like sex trafficking, GLBTIQ issues, and homosexuality in the military. She uses the media as a strong political tool to her advantage. After reading Joseph Schwartz’s article Investigating Differences in Public Support for Gay Rights Issues in the Journal of Homosexuality, he brought up the point that only 30% of the public favors same sex marriage and only another 50% favor same-sex parent adoption. I feel that these numbers could rapidly increase exponentially if more people spoke out and popularized the situation in the public sector. People are so quick to judge, but it is often because they have not seen any other side presented to them, so they are just stuck with the same opinions. I am happy that Lady Gaga does the work that America so desperately needs and with her help, we can together quit turning a cold shoulder to matters that are important to a great number of downtrodden and pushed-aside Americans.

Bad Romance

Bad Romance is undeniably another song by Lady Gaga that people probably don’t think too much into besides the fact that it is her usual catchy fast-paced beat and outlandish costume and sexuality. However, I had once overheard someone saying that they felt the video was about the dangers of human trafficking and prostitution: about how easily a woman could find herself caught in a “Bad Romance.” This is an important topic that we in the United States often fail to accept as a severe issue within our borders, and not just in foreign countries. After taking Social Work 230 during my freshman year, we spoke about human trafficking and had many strong advocates for women and children’s rights in the class which sparked my knowledge of the dangers of sex slavery. With phrases like “cause you’re a criminal as long as you’re mine” and “I want your disease” it is easy to see the parallels between the lyrics and the real life situation. I looked into Kimberly Kotrla’s article entitled “Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking in the United States” for more information on the topic and it was shocking to see how highly affected minors are and how saddening that is because it can be avoided. It also speaks on how America is, to a degree, a culture of acceptance and tolerance. It is no wonder that in Lady Gaga’s political activist mind, she chose to advocate against such a situation. The video clearly shows men bidding on scandalously dressed provocative women. These are things that I would have never caught unless I had watched the video. Again, Gaga speaks out for human rights.

Alejandro

When it comes to controversy over Gaga, religion is a main concern in the public sphere at the moment. Within hours of the premier of her video for Alejandro, Gaga was one of the most tweeted individuals as usual. Living up to her outrageous adjectives, she again managed to shock viewers. Though Lady Gaga was raised Catholic, it seems that this time she has went over the edge. The video for Alejandro shows Catholic and Christian images with ideals of sexuality, such as S&M and homosexuality. She is dressed up in a sexy nuns outfit and even sucks on rosary beads which is quite blasphemous to Catholic individuals. As a lifelong Catholic, I must admit I was shocked and slightly disturbed by the long video the first time I saw it. Director Steven Klein stated: "The religious symbolism is not meant to denote anything negative, but represents the character's battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the Soul, thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation." He says that Gaga eats the rosary beads in attempt to soak in the holiness. I usually try to understand the singer from an artistic standpoint but this video truly makes it hard to see where she is coming from. I am glad that I could find director commentary on the purpose and meaning of the imagery and try to see her view. I think it could be interesting to look into future representations of religion and have an open mind to seeing how other artists view different denominations. I think above all, it is necessary to keep in mind that we should be respectful to culture and religions norms as to try to evade offending fans and viewers.

Dead Meat is Dead Meat

One of the biggest uproars thus far in Lady Gaga’s career occurred when she wore an outfit made of raw meat to the MTV Music Awards. Most shuddered in disgust at the fact that someone would dare to wear such an outfit out in public, however, the meanings of her outrageous attire is not always very obvious. After reading a CBS news story on Gaga, with an attached video of her speech at the MTV Music Awards, I was truly shocked and impressed to understand the full meaning of what she meant. According to Gaga “Dead Meat is Dead Meat.” She was covered in this meat while she attended with four soldiers discharged from US military forces under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. I absolutely support her cause. She means that someone willing to put their life on the line for their country should be treated with utmost respect and admiration no matter their sexual orientation. She states that in a time of war when someone dies for their country they are not “gay and dead, or straight and dead, they are just dead.” Having a father who was in the Vietnam War, I was always interested in different situations surrounding military policy and one that I have always disagreed with is the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. Who are we as Americans to tell someone they CANNOT fight for our country and protect us simply because of who they love? I find it to be absolutely outrageous and I am so glad that she took a moral and ethical stand for these individuals who were willing to risk their lives for the very people who took away their honor and privilege. In the interview with 60 Minutes she says that she uses the media to make political statements but not necessarily her music.

Barbara Walters interviews Gaga

Something interesting that I found was Lady Gaga’s interview with Barbara Walters. I feel that they presented her well by saying that in 2009 she outperformed everyone as the first artist ever to have 4 number one hits off a debut album. As best new artist at the MTV movie awards, she stunned the audience with a crazy performance of her song “Paparazzi.” She claimed that she grew up as a small Catholic school girl with a dream: as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. She tells Barbara that she wants to liberate her young fans and free them because as a young girl she felt like a ‘freak’ being very different and awkward. Barbara no doubt confronts her about her attention getting scandalous clothing and videos and how her father was impacted when he saw some of her first performance videos. Gaga says that her and her father did not speak for months and he feared that she was mentally unstable, however grew to realize that she is just an artist with a vision that needed to be represented. Now they have a wonderful relationship again and she even saw him through a life-saving heart operation. This represents the necessity of individuals to be open-minded, most importantly, those closest to someone who feels often outcast. In this clip with Barbara, she admits that her song Pokerface was indeed about having sexual fantasies about a woman while being intimate with a man. In the interview she claims that the biggest misconception about her is that she is “artificial and attention seeking when the truth is that every bit of me is devoted to love and art and I aspire to be a teacher to my young fans.” This is an excellent interview to be showed over America to represent Gaga as the artist that many people, only slightly familiar with her work, would have never guessed.

Born This Way

One of the most profound songs ever produced by Lady Gaga is her most recent hit: Born This Way. Lady Gaga believes that homosexuality and bisexuality are not a choice, but that the individual was born that way and has no control over how they feel or who they love. What an absolutely empowering set of lyrics for someone, whether gay or straight, to turn when remembering to keep an open mind about minority groups. My personal favorite line is how she said that people cannot be considered ‘mistakes’ for simply being DIFFERENT. She says “I’m beautiful in my way, Cause God makes no mistakes.” She encourages her “little monsters” to not hide in regret. This is a very controversial song because of the debate as to whether or not being a GLBTIQ individual is a choice. Also, a further controversial point to make is her reference to God within the song. Many individuals claim through their religion that homosexuality is wrong and looked down upon and that God would have never made an ‘imperfect’ person. Gaga wants to let her fans know that there IS a God for them, and they are perfect in their own way. After watching many fan videos in reference to this song off Youtube, I saw an overwhelming response of gratitude and adoration. Many even said that her music encouraged them to gain confidence and come out to the public about their GLBTIQ issues. In a sense, she is more than a pop icon but also a hero to many. I think it’s also important to notice in the lyrics that she is not SOLEY speaking out for GLBTIQ individuals but ANYONE who feels they are different and being tormented, abused, or mocked, whether mentally or physically. Gaga exclaims “Whether you're broke or evergreen, You're black, white, beige, chola descent, You're lebanese, you're orient, Whether life's disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, Rejoice and love yourself today'Cause baby, you were born this way.” I have attached below the link to an awesome video that dissects each piece of Gaga’s video for Born This Way and shows exactly what certain symbols mean. Some symbols are hidden and subtle, other are more blatant. See if you can catch them all – Enjoy!

Lyrics:
It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M

Just put your paws up

'Cause you were born this way, baby

My mama told me when I was young

We are all born superstarsShe rolled my hair and put my lipstick on

In the glass of her boudoir

"There's nothin' wrong with lovin' who you are"

She said, "'Cause He made you perfect, babe"

"So hold your head up, girl and you you'll go far,

Listen to me when I say

"I'm beautiful in my way,

'Cause God makes no mistakes

I'm on the right track, baby

I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret,

Just love yourself and you're set

I'm on the right track, baby

I was born this way (Born this way)

Ooo, there ain't no other way

Baby, I was born this way

Baby, I was born this way

Ooo, there ain't other way

Baby, I was born this way

I'm on the right track, baby

I was born this way

Don't be a drag, just be a queen

Don't be a drag, just be a queen

Don't be a drag, just be a queen

Don't be!

Give yourself prudence and love your friends

Subway kid, rejoice of truth

In the religion of the insecure

I must be myself, respect my youth

A different lover is not a sin

Believe capital H-I-M (hey, hey, hey)

I love my life, I love this record and

Mi amore vole fe yah

Don't be drag, just be a queen

Whether you're broke or evergreen

You're black, white, beige, chola descent

You're lebanese, you're orient

Whether life's disabilities

Left you outcast, bullied or teased

Rejoice and love yourself today

'Cause baby, you were born this way

No matter gay, straight or bi

Lesbian, transgendered life

I'm on the right track, baby

I was born to survive

No matter black, white or beige

Chola or orient made

I'm on the right track, babyI was born to be brave

Ooo, there ain't no other way

Baby, I was born this way

Baby, I was born this way

Ooo, there ain't other way

Baby, I was born this way

I'm on the right track, baby

Pokerface

I would like to begin with one of Gaga’s most famous songs and one of the first songs that many people had ever heard from her: Pokerface! Posted below are the lyrics. At first when I heard this song, I had no idea why someone would sing about playing poker but then I looked into the true deeper meaning of the author. Gaga is a bisexual individual and I believe this song explains about her torn emotions between how she feels and how society expects her to feel: the relationship she IS in and the relationship she longs to be in. She is singing that while she is sexually involved with her current boyfriend, he can’t tell what she truly feels about him because she masks and hides her feelings behind her “pokerface.” While being intimate with this man, she is secretly thinking of a woman that she has feelings and desires for. This represents the many confused and questioning individuals out there struggling with their torn feelings. She lets these people know that what they’re feeling is normal and acceptable, nothing to be scared or ashamed of. Some people argue that this song has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality and it is all about how she is dating a man only for his money and is, in a sense, just a gold digger. Another opinion on the meaning of the song is that she is fighting with her boyfriend and wants him to be a humble person in the argument and show no emotion. In my personal opinion, I feel that by claiming “she’s got to love nobody” she is advocating that she does not need to love ANY individual to be happy, but when she does love someone it can be the person of her choice, whether male or female.

Lyrics:
I wanna hold em like they do in Texas Plays

Fold em let em hit me raise it baby stay with me,

I love it

Luck and intuition play the cards with Spades to start

And after he's been hooked I'll play the one that's on his heart

Oh, oh, oh

I'll get him hot, show him what I've got

Oh, oh, oh

I'll get him hot, show him what I've got

Can't read my, can't read my

No he can't read my poker face

(She's got to love nobody)

Can't read my, can't read my

No he can't read my poker face

(She's got to love nobody)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face

(Mum mum mum mah)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face

(Mum mum mum mah)

I wanna roll with him a hard pair we will be

A little gambling is fun when you're with me, I love it

Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun

And baby when it's love if it's not rough it isn't fun, fun

Can't read my, can't read my

No he can't read my poker face

(She's got to love nobody)

Can't read my, can't read my

No he can't read my poker face

(She's got to love nobody)

I won't tell you that I love you

Kiss or hug you

Cause I'm bluffin' with my muffin

I'm not lying I'm just stunnin' with my love-glue-gunning

Just like a chick in the casino

Take your bank before I pay you out

I promise this, promise this

Check this hand cause I'm marvelous
